Case Studies

I have helped authors address a variety of concerns, including but not limited to:

tackling punctuation

solving pacing issues

spotting and fixing plot holes

creating compelling character arcs

Here are a few case studies that illustrate the writing roadblocks and the steps I took to help my clients push through them:

Case Study 1:

A fantasy author created a diverse, rich world, but her beta readers felt disconnected from the characters and questioned the decisions characters made over the course of the story.

I helped the author formulate distinct backstories and motivations for each character, including side characters. Giving characters backstories and clear internal/external motivations allowed beta readers to fully understand and relate to the characters. They no longer had a reason to step away from the story and try to work out whether certain actions did or didn’t make sense. Instead, they stayed immersed and gave positive feedback in the end. The author was thrilled!

Case Study 2:

A non-fiction author wrote a book on mindfulness and stress relief. It was important to him that readers grasped the valuable, yet complex concepts and scientific information with ease.

I worked on a sentence/paragraph level and did a thorough line/copy edit. I focused on show versus tell, sentence structure, reworked run-on sentences, and fixed all punctuation errors that negatively impacted comprehension. The author was pleased with how I managed to revise the text without changing his voice or unnecessarily altering any of his ideas and concepts.

Case Study 3:

An author wrote a fast-paced, action-packed thriller, but had trouble catching punctuation/spelling errors. They were excited to kick-start the query process, but felt that the manuscript wasn’t ready just yet.

While the author worked on drafting the second book in the series, I rolled up my sleeves and tackled spelling and punctuation errors, replaced hyphens with em dashes, fixed dialogue tags, and made sure that paragraphs were properly indented. Once I returned the manuscript, it was error-free and query-ready!
